How Can I Fix a Jammed Garage Door?

Imagine yourself in a rush to head off for work one day; you know there’s a traffic jam to look forward to, and just when you head out with your car, you realize that your garage door is jammed.

If your garage door is jammed, the first thing you should do is check the sensors. If they’re dirty or out of alignment, that could be causing the problem. You can also try disconnecting and reconnecting the power source to see if that does anything. If neither works, you may need to call a professional to look at it.

I Hear a Loud Noise When My Garage Door Opens or Closes – What’s Wrong?

It may have happened to you, or it could have just been something you encountered with a neighbor ~ late at night, as the car is brought into the garage, all of a sudden, there is a loud noise coming out of your mechanism that wakes the entire neighborhood up. How embarrassing!

There are several possible causes for this issue. It could be something as simple as loose hardware or something more serious like a broken spring. We also recommend checking all the nuts and bolts on your door to see if any are loose. However, you may need to call a professional if that doesn’t fix the problem.

Why Won’t My Garage Door Opener Work?

Imagine going to work early in the morning for a presentation that your career depends on, and suddenly, your garage door won’t work! You’ve tried everything from changing the batteries to banging your head in the door. We’ve all been there, and it is frustrating!

There are a few things that could be causing this issue. First, check to ensure the power is turned on and the batteries in your remote are fresh. Suppose the door doesn’t open after you replace the remote’s batteries. In that case, the signal between the remote and the opener transmitter may be broken. Your remote’s range or the opener’s antennae can cause a signal interruption.

If that doesn’t work, you may also need to reset the opener or replace the motor unit. If none of those things work, you’ll probably need to call a professional.

Keep the Path Free from Debris or Objects

If there’s something blocking the path of your garage door, it can keep the door from closing properly. To clear the path:

  • Remove any objects that may be in the way, such as boxes or lawn equipment.
  • Check for any debris, such as leaves or dirt, and remove it.
  • Make sure that the tracks are clear of any buildup and free of rust.

Keep Your Tracks Free from Rust and Other Buildups

If your garage door tracks are rusty or have other buildups, it can cause your door not to close properly. To clean your garage door tracks:

  • Use a soft cloth to wipe away any dirt, dust, or debris.
  • Use a brush to remove any rust or buildup.
  • Wipe the tracks clean with a clean cloth.
  • Lubricate the tracks with a silicone-based lubricant.

Make Sure to Adjust Your Tension Springs

If the tension springs on your garage door are too loose or too tight, it can cause your door not to close properly. To adjust the tension springs:

  • Before working on your garage door, relax the springs. The best technique to release garage door cable tension is to leave the door open. Clamp the door using C clamps under the bottom rollers to hold it open.
  • Use a stepladder to reach the garage door’s open cable. Since the spring isn’t under stress, you can take the hook from the track hanger and relocate it to a different hole to adjust the tension.
  • Repair garage door spring tension. Adjust both springs by moving the hook one hole at a time.
  • Move the spring hook to a lower door track hole to reduce spring stress. Spring tension is reduced.
  • If you wish to tighten the garage door cable, adjust the springs, and increase tension, hook it to a higher hole on the door track. Stretching the spring creates tension.
  • To modify one side’s tension, adjust the cable where there was a gap. Reduce tension by hooking the cable to a lower hanger hole.
  • After adjusting, unclamp the door and try it out. Keep adjusting until the door closes as desired.
